Viswanathan Anand

Name: Viswanathan Anand
Age: 43
Country: India
World Champion

We're delighted that the multiple and reigning World Champion “Vishy” Anand will compete in the inaugural Baden-Baden GRENKE Chess Classic. Since 2002 OSG Baden-Baden, the Chess Centre and GRENKE have had a great sporting and human affinity with Vishy, who is always very welcome in Baden-Baden. The World Champion often lives and works on chess in Bad Soden, where he maintains close ties to Chess Tigers and its Chairman Hans-Walter Schmitt. Two years ago Vishy became the proud father of a son along with his wife and manager Aruna.

Listing all his achievements is far beyond the scope of this short profile, but it’s safe to say the “Tiger of Madras” is already ensured a place in the chess history books. He captured the undisputed World Championship title in 2007 in Mexico and defended it successfully in 2008 against Vladimir Kramnik in Bonn, in 2010 against Veselin Topalov in Sofia and in 2012 against Boris Gelfand in Moscow. In autumn 2013 he’ll again have to defend his title against the winner of the London Candidates Tournament.

It will be exciting to see how the German team players fare in their encounters with the World Champion, and Viswanathan Anand will undoubtedly stand in the path of anyone who wants to win the Baden-Baden GRENKE Chess Classic.
