Fabiano Caruana

Name: Fabiano Caruana
Age: 20
Country: Italy
World rank: No. 13

Fabiano Caruana is the youngest participant in the inaugural Baden-Baden GRENKE Chess Classic. He holds both Italian and American citizenship and earned the grandmaster title at the age of 14, something never done before by an American or Italian.

Fabiano was the revelation of 2012, with a sequence of fine performances propelling him into the world Top 5 by the end of the year. Although he suffered a rare setback in Wijk aan Zee in January many experts see the 20-year-old as a future World Championship contender.

When he was five years old his talent was discovered by the renowned chess trainer Bruce Pandolfini. Fabiano made rapid progress, becoming the U10 American Champion in 2002 before winning the U12 event a year later. In between he beat a grandmaster for the first time in the New York Grand Prix. Tournament successes then followed one after another. Since 2006 he’s played for Italy and is a multiple Italian Champion. The highlights of his career so far include winning the C and B tournaments in Wijk aan Zee, while in 2012 he won the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting ahead of a world-class field. From 2008 to 2010 he played for OSG Baden-Baden in the German League.

The Italian number one goes into the GRENKE Chess Classic as the tournament favourite alongside Viswanathan Anand. The audience can look forward to fighting chess from the Italian youngster.
